John Janicki

My grandfather John, grandmother Sophie, and me

John Janicki was my grandfather, my Dad's father. he was born on 11 November 1892, in Polonisz, Kolo, "Russian" Poland. (note: in 1892, Poland was partitioned between Russia, Prussia, and Austria. see map.) He was the son of Andrew Janicki & Maria Sowinska. He immigrated to the United States in 1910 and on February 3, 1914 applied for Naturalization. He settled in Chicago, where he met my grandmother, Sophie Przeslowska, and where he married her on September 29, 1915. They had a total of 8 children, but 4 died in infancy (See here for a note from my Aunt Steph about our family tree.) For a time they were shopkeepers in Chicago. Later, the family moved to a farm in New Buffalo, Michigan. On 9 February 1947, he died from a concussion and skull fracture, after the automobile he was in was hit by a train.
