Slides
Introduction
These slides depict life in Guatamelan refugee camps located in southern Mexico.
The camps were located in the regions of Chiapas and Campeche. Many of the following slides were taken at Quetzal Edna , which was one of the largest camps in Campache. Also, some of the slides may have been taken at Puerto Rico, a camp in Chiapas.
These slides were taken in the early and mid-1980's by Sister Peggy Janicki,a Maryknoll missionary, (and others). She lived in the camps and shared her life with the refugees.
I've tried to organize the slides by topic; e.g. In the Fields, to help you better understand daily life in a refugee camp.
(Note: The captions on many of the slides were taken from a recorded conversation I made with her in August, 2023.)
Overview
"It might be Puerto Rico, but I'm not sure because this looks like everybody had an individual house, and In Puerto Rico they had longer houses that just got chopped up into pieces.
"I don't think this is in Campeche, I think this is in Chiapas somewhere."

"That's Mary who lived with me for a while, in the camp. She stayed when I left."
